Why is Primer Important? – Is it really necessary?

The primer is a relatively new product. For many people, it is considered as just a marketing strategy that seeks to make us spend more money. However, the primer has been shown to have several benefits. For this reason, today, I am going to try to tell you: why is primer necessary?

As I have already mentioned in previous posts, my love for cosmetics started recently, let’s say 6 or 7 years. At this time, I had no idea how to use anything or what each product was for. For me, the only things that existed were the foundation, the concealer, the eyeshadow, the mascara, and the lipstick.

My lack of knowledge was huge, and when I started hearing about the primer, it seemed like a completely unnecessary product. I admit that I used to be someone who believed that brands were simply looking for us to spend more money on their products. I thought that, in reality, this was not going to do anything for me or my makeup.

Several years passed until one day, I was encouraged to buy one. Considering that I had never purchased or used a primer, I bought one that was not suitable for my skin type. Despite this, the primer helped me a lot with the look of my makeup. At this moment, I realized that the primer really was necessary.

For all these reasons, I decided to make this post. I would like everyone to know the benefits of the primer and start using it. I’m sure you will see the results.

What is the primer?

To begin with, we must know what primer is?. Primer is a cosmetic product that is applied before the foundation and is used to prepare the skin before makeup.

It generally comes in a liquid presentation. Sometimes it looks like a cream and sometimes a gel. The above does not mean that it is not found in other formats. Lately, you can find primers in stick, in pomade, and even in spray format.

The most common way to use it is to apply it with your fingers, like a face cream. You should begin to apply it in the center of the face, from the nose towards the periphery. We should let it absorb for a couple of minutes and then use the foundation.

Types of primer

When buying a primer, we must take into account our skin type.

  • Oily skin: If your skin is oily, you should use oil-free primers. The recommendation is that they be those with a matte finish, which will help control the production of oil in your skin.
  • Combination skin and normal skin: If you have any of these skin types, you can use the primers that are for all skin types. Depending on whether you want to have matte skin or luminous skin, you can choose what you like the most.
  • Dry skin: For dry skin, it is advisable to use moisturizing primers with a luminous finish. Since these will not dry out your skin anymore and will help it look soft and juicy.

Another way to classify the primer is by taking into account the finish they have. Keep in mind that there are primers that can have several finishes. For example, a mattifying primer that hides pores and also has a color to help correct undertones.

  • Mattifying primer: This type of primer helps control the brightness of the face, which helps makeup last longer without looking greasy.
  • Illuminating or luminous primer: This type of primer helps the skin look radiant and juicy. It is used to highlight certain features and is ideal for mature skin.
  • Primer to hide pores: Perfects and smoothes the skin helping to reduce the appearance of pores. This type of primer can even mask fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Corrector primer: These primers help correct the skin’s undertone to make it look more homogeneous. For example, a green primer helps neutralize redness. Violets, on the other hand, help to balance yellow tones.

Why is it important?

Now, let’s talk about the benefits of primers.

The first of them is that it lengthens the duration of makeup in general. Thanks to the fact that it creates a barrier between the skin and the foundation, the primer helps the products that we put on top to not come into direct contact with our skin. This allows any imperfection or problem that we have in the skin to not affect the makeup. For example, if we have oily skin, the primer will prevent the skin from producing fat. This will help the foundation to not dissolve with our own grease, so it lasts much longer.

Another benefit is that it unifies the tone of our skin. This is a great help for the foundation as it allows it to look more even. Also, it helps you not to apply so much foundation and so much concealer. This is important not only because you will save money, but because your skin will be able to breathe better.

Additionally, the primer seals the pores. This means that the product enters the small holes that we have in our face and makes that the foundation that we apply on top does not penetrate them. The end result will be soft and smooth skin. This feature also helps keep pores from clogging with makeup and therefore prevents breakouts.

On the other hand, it can help us look younger. However, we must clarify something. Primers generally do not have anti-aging ingredients to help reduce fine lines in the long term. That is, they do not do the same as an anti-aging cream.

What happens is that, as with open pores, the primer fills in small wrinkles and prevents the foundation from entering them, which gives the appearance of younger skin. However, this is a short-term effect since once you remove your makeup, your skin will look as before.

However, some primers do have long-term benefits. Yet, most of these are a bit more expensive as they have skincare ingredients.

Another benefit is that it is super easy to use. In fact, you can apply it like any face cream. It won’t take long, but it will make your makeup look prettier and last longer.

Finally, you will find primers of all prices and for all skin types. That is, you will not have to worry about costs since you can find drugstore brand primers that are equal to or better than high-end ones.

Did I convince you?

My goal with this post is not to force you to change your mind. If you still think that primers are useless and that they are an unnecessary expense, I respect what you think.

My only intention is to provide you with information that I did not have when I started. What I am looking for is that, if you make the decision not to use a primer, you take it knowing all the facts.

In my particular case, I will continue to use primer and for several reasons:

First, I like the way my makeup looks. Second, it helps my makeup to last longer. And third, I save money on foundations and concealers.

But tell me what you think. I would like to know your opinion. You can leave it in the comments below.
